Standard Honorary Diploma

The Emery County School District Standard "Honorary High School Diploma" program is being established to recognize and reward those individuals residing within the school district boundaries who, due to unusual and/or hardship circumstances, were unable to complete the requirements for graduation from high school at the time they would have normally graduated with their own class.

This program is not intended to discourage individuals from pursuing an official high school diploma. Adult education courses are offered through the school district to help individuals meet the requirements for graduation. There may be, however, individuals who, for various reasons, are unable to pursue that course, but would like to receive some recognition for the knowledge they have gained through life's experiences and for the positive contributions they may have made to their family, community, and to Emery County.

Family members may also nominate an individual to receive the Standard "Honorary High School Diploma".

Requirements

Make application for the diploma through the Supervisor of Secondary Education at the School District Office. Applicant criteria:

  1. Has lived within the boundaries of the Emery County School District for at least 25 years.

  2. Has been at least 50 years since the applicant would have normally graduated from high school.

  3. Is a citizen of the United States.

  4. Has never been convicted of a felony or other serious crime.

  5. Was denied the opportunity to receive a diploma at the normal time in life due to unusual or hardship circumstances.

  6. Has contributed in positive ways to family, community, and Emery County.

Veterans Honorary Diploma Requirements

The Board of Education may award an honorary high school diploma to a veteran, if the veteran:

  1. left high school before graduating in order to serve in the armed forces of the United States;

  2. served in the armed forces of the United States during the period of World War II, the Korean War, or the Vietnam War;

  3. was honorably discharged; or was released from active duty because of a service-related disability; and

  4. resides within the school district; or resided within the school district at the time of leaving high school to serve in the armed forces of the United States.

    To receive an honorary high school diploma, a veteran or immediate family member or guardian of a veteran shall submit to a local school board:

    1. a request for an honorary high school diploma; and

    2. information to verify the veteran's eligibility for an honorary high school diploma

At the request of a veteran, a veteran's immediate family member or guardian, or a local school board, the Department of Veterans' Affairs shall certify whether the veteran meets the requirements.

Awarding of Diplomas

Honorary High School Diplomas, for approved candidates, will be presented at a regularly scheduled meeting of the Emery County School Board. Successful candidates will be notified in advance of the meeting time and date.

Honorary diplomas for veterans may be presented as part of the high school commencement exercises, if deemed appropriate by the Board and the High School Administration.
